📜 A Storied Past Anchored in Early America

Rutland’s story stretches back to the 17th century. Originally part of the Nipmuc lands known as “Naquag,” the area was first settled by Europeans around 1686 and eventually incorporated as a town in 1713. Its original territory was expansive — including portions of what became Barre, Hubbardston, Oakham, Princeton, and parts of Paxton.

The town’s location near the highlands gave it significance in colonial times and early American history. During the Revolutionary War period, Rutland hosted prison camps for captured Hessian soldiers and was home to General Rufus Putnam, a key figure in the war and later known as the “Father of Ohio.” His historic home, built in the mid-1700s and later owned by Putnam, still stands today and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

In the late 1800s, this town also became known as a health resort destination, thanks to its high elevation (about 1,200 feet) and reputation for clean air, which attracted those seeking fresh air living during the era of tuberculosis sanatoriums.  New Listings
